Wet dreams, does it hamper your sexual performance? Myths and Facts

So, what are wet dreams? In a simple term, when you ejaculate while sleeping it is termed as wet dreams. Though it is also an informal name of nocturnal emission. In rural India, such dreams are commonly known as nightfall. Such dreams occur in those youngsters who have attained adulthood. One of the more prevalent reasons for wet dreams are during puberty, your body starts making more testosterone. Genitals are sensitive. If you dream of anything that turned you on there is a chance that you might ejaculate in your sleep.

Restricted to a certain age?

During puberty, your body goes through many hormonal changes. These hormonal changes are more frequent in your teenage times. Your hormones settle down with age. You become sexually mature too if you are sexually active throughout your lifespan. But, young adults or sexually mature people can also have erotic dreams. So, in comparison to your teenage times, the chance of having wet dreams are infrequent during your adult times.

Do they reduce sperm count?

No, it does not reduce sperm count. The excess sperm in the testicle comes out during wet dreams so, whatever is there it gets released. There is no association between sperm quality and wet dreams. Both are different things. You should also remember that nightfall is not a sign of illness. Rather it is a sign of a healthy sexual body.

Women are not different.

Women also have wet dreams. Erotic dreams are not only associated with men. Women also feel aroused in their dream. To think that only men have wet dreams is far from reality.

Do frequent wet dreams normal?

If you are in your teens, it means you are going through hormonal changes then, yes. As a sexually active adult, it should not occur frequently because during wet dreams, excess sperm releases. Still, it is not abnormal.  

If the frequent nocturnal emission (medical name of wet dreams) has worried you then, you should check with a sex doctor.

What are the things that I should do after wet dreams?

Most of the time people wake up in the morning and find their nightdress wet. Some people might wake up during wet dreams because they feel like they are going to wet the bed. In both cases, you should clean yourself first. It would be best if you use soap and properly clean your genitals. If this incidence causes any guilt in you it will be better to talk to someone or a sex therapist.

Is it possible to stop having such dreams?

No, it is not possible to prevent wet dreams. Though, you can reduce the frequency of wet dreams. Meditation can also help you declutter your mind. Most of the time nightfall occurs because of sex-related thoughts. If you are able to control your thought process with the help of meditation then definitely you shall be able to reduce the frequency of nightfall.
